Falling boxes killed man at a fish processing company in Plymouth

A Plymouth based company have been fined £500,000 after falling boxes killed a man at their fish processing location in Plymouth.

22 year old Tomas Suchy was helping clear up a fallen stack of frozen fish boxes when there was another fall of stock which stuck him. The HSE investigated the incident – which happened 2 and ½ years ago, to find there was not a safe system of work or instruction of staff on how pallet should be stored.
Interfish Limited pleaded guilty to beaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, and has to pay £24,800 costs on top of the £500,000 fine.

Forklift Operator Killed in 2013, Large Steel Fabrication Company fined

A large steel fabrication company have been fined £135,000 and ordered to pay costs of £46,020 after pleading guilty to a non-causative breach of Regulation 5(1) of the Management of Health and Safety Work Regulations 1999 for the fatal accident in 2013.

The operator was killed when the truck he was operating overturned. When reversing the forklift, the operator struck some steps, which caused the overturn. Having not been wearing a seatbelt, the operator suffered crush injuries which proved fatal.

The company in question failed to manage forklift driving operations, meaning they didn’t enforce the wearing of seat-belts or control the speed at which some forklift truck operators drove their trucks.

This is why it is so important that not only are your forklift operators trained, but it is also important to ensure that the people who are meant to manage forklift operations are trained adequately to do so.

HL Training Services not only provide quality forklift training throughout the UK, but also provide training for Managers and Supervisors of warehouses so they are aware of warehousing rules and regulations.

If any of your staff need training, whether it be adequate basic training for novice operators or refreshers – to managers and supervisors training, please contact us as soon as possible so we can be sure you can avoid making the same mistake as the company above.
